I've seen two sides of the possible impact of the events of recent days, week and months in Thailand during the past couple of days.
The beach at Cha Am, just over two hours south of Bangkok on the Gulf of Thailand, was crowded. Yes, it was a public holiday in Thailand but there was a significant number of what appeared to be tourists. From what I overheard these were a mix of British and Germans.
Today I've seen the other side; an almost deserted department store at Future Park in Rangist on the outskirts of Bangkok. Few tourists would venture to this particular mall so it would seem Thai people are reluctant to spend right now. This backs up comments I've had from a friend who is the merchandising manager of one of Bangkok's big lifestyle stories.
If you're in Bangkok do you think it's quieter than normal, or haven't you noticed any difference?
Definitely quieter than normal, according to what I could see. The posh shopping centers were a shadow of their regular selves. Even the showing of Ong Bak 2 that I caught on Saturday afternoon at Central World was very sparsely attended.
