ENGLISH MEDIA IN THAILAND

Despite the Thai government's wishes for more people to learn to speak and write English, two of the small daily English Language newspapers ceased business last week. Business Day and Thai Day were small and arguably niche publications, but their demise leaves just two - The Bangkok Post and The Nation - compared to almost a dozen Thai daily newspapers. And the combined circulation of those two English papers is probably less than 1/20th of the Thai newspapers.
This is actually good news for me personally. It underlines the fact that Thai people want to read newspapers and magazines in their native language, and that is what my meeting in Singapore a week tomorrow will be about - taking an English magazine and reproducing it in Thai for the local market.
