LADBROKES GAMBLES ON THAILAND
The August edition of BusinessWeek Thailand has an investigative story about how one large bookmaker is openly flouting Thailand's strict gambling laws.
Ladbrokes, a U.K. company with headquarters in Gibraltar, has recently been investing in a Thai language portal and Thai language customer service support, and this is despite gambling being illegal within the Kingdom. It's also been advertising the site in some of the Thai language magazines that target the young male market. (The advertising of the site does not break any current publishing laws).
Many such gambling sites are blocked by Thailand's Ministry of Communications but the Ladbrokes site remains accessibly, at least for now, through some ISPs. And whilst it's hard to predict the number of Thai users of the site, a list of winners published on the casino section during July showed "big winners" from within the Kingdom totalling more than 7 million baht.
The Royal Thai Police have been pretty active against bookies and punters in recent months and they were pretty interested to hear of our findings.
Read the full story (in Thai) in the August edition of BusinessWeek Thailand, available from major Thai language bookstores and Asia Books.
