VIOLENCE ESCALATES IN BANGKOK
Current advice (Monday afternoon) from the British Embassy in Bangkok is "British residents in, and visitors to, Bangkok are advised to avoid any areas where demonstrations are taking place and to stay indoors as far as possible. In view of the deteriorating security situation anyone considering going to Bangkok should urgently review their plans." Soldiers are on the streets and shots have been fired.
There is a 'State of Emergency' in Bangkok and the vicinity. The BBC is showing dramatic footage of burning buses smashing into each other. Much of the protesting is happening on the far side of the city from me (I am in the south west in Tha Phra) and outside my condo kids or throwing water over passing motorbikes just as they did last Songkran. But in other parts of the city and throughout Thailand it's more than water that is being thrown.

This is very different from your post "what's happening in Bangkok" from April 8th, and maybe the media were not that bad claiming that anyone should avoid Bangkok as much as possible.
The thing is: no one knows what can and will happen and it's probably better to stay away from the country for the time being.
Bart, yes. I accept what you say. At that time the situation was relatively fine but things have changed.
Who could have reasonably predicted the "red shirts" would bring two armored vehicles and part them outside Siam Paragon? Who would have predicted Bangkok's biggest stores would close on one of their biggest trading days of the year?
Things have changed, and so had my opinion. It is serious, and there is no easy outcome to the situation Thailand finds itself in right now.
What do you think?
I think what we're seeing is a replay of the unrest in the early 80's. The players are even the same...Read up on the characters behind the 1981 and 1985 coup attempts, and the Charter Investment pyramid scheme. It's actually quite fascinating.
