WITH THE REDS ON RAJADAMNOEN
I'm home after spending a couple of hours walking up and down Rajadamnoen Avenue in Bangkok where most the red-shirt anti-government protesters are gathering. It's hard to estimate just how many people, but for certain the numbers are growing by the hour. Policing is light and the mood of the protesters, at least when I was there, was jovial although seemingly determined. A number of red-shirts even came up to say 'hello' in their best English. The news of these protests is now headlining around the world. It was lead story on the 2pm (local time) news on BBC World. With both sides determined to hold their respective positions I guess there will be a lot more coverage around the world in the coming hours and days.

Thanks for sharing these pics. The smiles you have captured show a really different side to the protests, a side that you can only see if you're actually there.
Great photos! The Los Angeles Times (Sunday's print edition) had a short article, but no photos.
The article said that the demonstrators numbered about 100k (didn't specify the location), and didn't mention any confrontations.

Hi! I am scheduled to leave for Bangkok this Friday, March 19. I would just like to know if its still safe to go from a tourist's standpoint. Would appreciate your feedback on this.
Bunny. My opinion is that Bangkok is still a safe place to visit. The demonstration is now happening in one small place of what is a very large city. There is the potential for anything to happen anywhere in the city though, and I would regularly check local media while you are here.
Check the advice being given by your government, and also check the terms of your travel insurance to see what you're covered for in the event of civil unrest - if the worst happens.
I'm sure your trip to Bangkok will be trouble-free and, personally, I would not postpone or cancel your trip.
Do keep in touch and let me know what you decide. And don't hesitate to let me know if there's anything else I can help you with.
