PRESS FREEDOM IN THAILAND SLUMPS

A report issued yesterday by The Committee To Protect Journalists ranks Thailand as one of the 10 worse countries in the world for press freedom. The report claims that the ten worse countries for press freedoms are Ethiopia, Gambia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Russia, Cuba, Pakistan, Egypt, Azerbaijan, Morocco and Thailand.
Whilst Thailand has slumped dramatically in the standings, much of the fall is down to the events surrounding last September's coup - and the temporary censorship of media including CNN and the BBC.
The reality right now, for me at least, is nowhere near as bad as the headlines suggest. You do have to be aware of certain cultural issues, but that doesn't amount to censorship in my view. When the elections, planned for December, are held then I'm sure you'll see Thailand rise to a more respectable and realistic level. The changes have already begun.
