MARRIAGE FOR THE WRONG REASONS?

The Bangkok Post had an interesting story yesterday about Thai-Foreign marriages. To me the most fascinating statistic which was buried about two-thirds through said that in the district of Bangrak in Bangkok during 2006, around 50 per cent of the 6,124 registered marriages were between Thai women and Western men. That's an incredibly high number.
There's also an interesting quote in this story from an assistant professor. "More Isaan (in North East Thailand) women each year marry Western men to improve the quality of life for their families. The marriages have brought them more financial independence and, even in some cases, a steady monthly income for their parents."
Whatever happened to marrying someone because you love them?
