A BIRTHDAY TO REMEMBER

Yesterday's 80th birthday celebrations for His Majesty the King touched even me. I spent the day in my condo watching the televised events. Hundreds of thousands of Thais turned out to show their love and admiration for the King, and throughout the country there were light shows and firework displays. I look this image from my balcony.
Did anyone here see Dan Rivers' coverage on CNN? If you did, let me know what you thought? I felt it totally missed the point and was on the verge of being distasteful. Today's papers are packed full of images of the King, the royal family and Thai people celebrating, and as someone who is proud to call Thailand my home I will keep these images with me forever.

One of the defining characteristics of the American press is cynicism. It colours how we Americans view the world, and ultimately, how we view ourselves. Given their exalted view of themselves, and how their opinions 'matter', it is no surprise that CNN's reporting on the Thai celebration of their Father would be disrespectful, condescending and patronizing. Only someone who has seen firsthand what the king has done for Thailand would understand the love the people feel for him.
