THERE'S AN ELEPHANT IN MY SOI

Well okay, not my soi (street) exactly but only a very short distance away. Coming home on Wednesday evening I did a cartoon-esque double take. An elephant? Close to my condo? Yes .. it really was an elephant and it really was just a few hundred metres from home.
I should add that I live in a very un-touristy part of Bangkok. I've seen the occasional elephant plodding along the streets around Sukhumvit, its owner keen to find tourists who will pay to feed it or have their picture taken with it. But tourists just don't come to my part of town. It's a very Thai area and I have often joked that "I am the only farang in my soi", to quote a similar saying from Little Britain.
I've not seen the elephant since and I doubt I will see it again. I only wish the taxi I was in at the time was going a little slower so I could have taken a picture.
