THE THA PHRA TORNADO

I'm no meteorologist but what I experienced last night must be as close to a tornado as you can get. The winds were so strong, strong enough to blow pretty large branches off trees and knock advertising signs to the floor. The rain was swirling in all directions and the thunder and lightening - well I have not seen anything quite so spectacular in my two years in Thailand. The winds lasted for a good 30 minutes but the thunder and lightening went on for hours. There's nothing in the English media this morning. Did anyone else experience this freak storm yesterday evening?

Where was that picture taken, please? I saw that storm last night....and I was probably not too far from where you saw it.

I took it from the balcony of my condo which is roughly opposite The Mall Tha Phra - looking in a northerly direction. The storm lasted for at least 90 minutes in this part of Bangkok.

I am also in Tha Phra, but further down, in Talad Phlu. Yes, it was fierce...though it was not confined to our part of town. The Post carried a picture on its front page today...lamp posts went down in some parts, it said.

I stand corrected about the lack of media coverage. Yes, it was a fierce one and quite a few trees came down in my soi too.
Just for further geographical reference the building in the distance roughly in the centre of the pic if the Life@BTS Tha Phra development.

Thank you. I wondered if it was the same one. It is but a minute's walk from my place. How do you find life on the Thon Buri side, apart from the storms?

I like life in this part of Bangkok, and I like the feeling of being almost the only farang in my soi.
The traffic isn't too bad if you time trips to and from work before and after the rest of the world. It makes for some long days but it's not so bad.

I am the only farang in the market where I live, and enjoy the same feeling of anonymity. I have also been here long enough for some Thai residents in the area to know me, which is a good feeling.

I would prefer to have more tertiary-aged Thais around, as they can add life to a place. The market is home to mainly young families, or elderly Thai-Chinese.

Maybe the demographics will change once the skytrain link across the river is built. Developers have put up many condos in anticipation, so they must be expecting those people to come from somewhere.

I am a journalist who works nights, so don't have to worry about the traffic in the morning. Going into town in the evening can be difficult...it depends on the day, the weather, and the time I leave.

So you're a journalist too? We should meet up sometime.
