THAKSIN, THAILAND AND ASYLUM

Others with far more wisdom and knowledge about this situation will write about Thaksin's apparent decision to seek asylum in the United Kingdom. I can only speak from my experiences and views, and I have to say I didn't think it would come to this.
When I interviewed Dr. Thaksin in Dubai just four months ago he was resolute and determined. He gave the impression he would fight on. Now it seems he's taken flight just when the going gets tough, or perhaps his claims that he's not getting fair justice here are true?
One thing is for certain; Thailand's relationship with the United Kingdom will be somewhat strained for a while.

It would be rather foolish of the UK to grant asylum to Thaksin. I'd imagine there will be a rather breathless extradition battle in the UK court system, ala Pinochet, with Thaksin being returned, however reluctantly, to Thailand. I don't think the UK is going to rule on the Thai legal system simply for the sake of a billionaire football team owner.
