NATION YO-YOS ON SUNDAY EDITION

I don't know what's going on at The Nation? Earlier this year they suspended publication of their Sunday edition, only for a resumption in late July - firstly in a paid-for form of freebie Daily Xpress and then in a much slimmed down version of the daily broadsheet offering.
Now, in an obvious response to the improved and widely welcomed improved Sunday edition of The Bangkok Post, The Nation is advertising a 'new' Sunday edition which will appear from October 26.
I know from contacts at The Bangkok Post that producing the six section Sunday edition is draining resources. I've noticed more and more agency stories appearing and less locally written material. I'm not sure whether Nation Group has either the manpower or financial resources to be able to come close to matching what's being provided by The Bangkok Post, but I am very sure this is just a cynical attempt to win back advertising revenue the company has lost.
One thing is for certain. Confidence amongst media buyers and advertisers will have diminished because of the indecision and apparent lack of consistency from management at Nation Towers.

dear bangkok bugle, the nation's sunday section will be called 'ace". and it will be a 36-page magazine. its content will be 50% the nation and 50% asia news network. what i understand is the nation will not abandon daily xpress, yet.

Insider. Thanks for your comments and for the information.

I'm not sure about the word 'Ace' - it sounds a bit too lifestyle-ish (if that's a word), whereas I'm assuming that by using content from Asia News Network it will be more serious.

On the subject of Daily Xpress it seems advertising has improved quite a bit in recent months, although no one outside Nation knows what kind of rates are being achieved.

Thanks again for your insight. It's much appreciated.

dear bangkok bugle, "ace" is such an old fashioned word. the asia news network content that "ace" will be using is "lifestyle-ish" as the magazine will be lite reading.

I wonder if ACE actually stands for something? Asia C.. E.. ?

I also wonder how it might differ from the current Asia News magazine (a copy of which can be downloaded for free at http://www.asianewsnet.net/news.php?sec=1. I am assuming both publications will use much of the same content?

It should be interesting though, and I wish Nation Group much success with this new venture.

dear bangkok bugle, no mystery to "ace". it is called "ace" because the nation lack imagination. half of the magazine's content will be original stories from the nation's feature desk and half will be "lifestyle-ish" stories from asianews. ace and asianews will have different cover most of the time.
