POST SAYS SORRY FOR 'OFFENSIVE' AD
The Bangkok Post has issued an apology for an advertisement that appeared in last week's Guru - the lifestyle and entertainment magazine that comes free every Friday.
A note on page 3 of today's Guru says: "Regarding the issue of a certain advertisement that appeared in Guru last week.We would like to offer our sincerest apologies to any of our readers who were offended in any way. The problem occurred due to a misunderstanding within our Display Department and is being dealt with internally. It was neither Guru or The Bangkok Post's intention to offend any readers. Please rest assured that the problem has been rectified and such advertisements will not appear in Guru or any other Bangkok Post publications in the future."
I'm not going to mention too much about the ad because to do so I would have to include words that I'd rather not, even though I'd probably get a huge number of additional visitors. I've reproduced it and click on the image if you want a closer look.
Is it offensive to you? It's promoting a product that some people might find useful. It's probably no worse than some ads that appear in other publications, however I guess many, many people must have objected for Post Publishing to issue a public apology and refuse to take similar advertising in the future.

What kind of 'misunderstanding' could lead to such an ad being published in Guru?
This silly rag bends over backwards to sound hip but ends up sounding just plain silly.
This reminds me of the great underpants furore a few years ago. The Ministry of Culture or whatever complained at media advertising and hoardings where some trim young tings were spreadeagled on a bed actually wearing said undergarments allegedly causing several crashes.
A few days ago the Bangkok Post ran an article about ED (aka impotence) and the illustration was a cucumber and peeled and unpeeled bananas. Gratuitous, offensive or fun?
I've seen far more potentially offensive ads, so I can only assume that someone "high up" complained?
I guess the misunderstanding is that no one realised this ad would cause so many problems. It's true that sometimes ads come so close to deadline, but perhaps the rep who sold it didn't understand what it said?
Andrew - there's a Triumph bra ad with massive distraction potential on my way home. I'll try and get a picture of it sometime this week.
4 comments already and this one to add - interesting what gets us going!!!
