THAI LAUNCHES GLOBAL AD CAMPAIGN

Thai Airways International has launched a global television and print advertising campaign this week entitled 'Blooming Thailand: No one brings you closer to the heart of Thailand than Thai."
Using the Kingdom's famous tourist attractions - a floating market, a night market and a beach spa - the television ad follows groups of travelers as they encounter the generosity of the Thai people during their visit.
Thai still remains a substantially more expensive option on all the routes I have looked at myself recently, and I personally think that no amount of advertising will compensate for that pricing differential when most travelers want to pay as little as possible.

A Thai Air ticket from LA to Bangkok costs twice what other airlines will fly you there for. But most of the Wednesday and Saturday flights are sold out. Because LA is considered a Thai Jangwat, there are discounts to be had, but I would imagine the Thai proclivity to "buy local" also extends to the airline. Thai Air will have a harder sell, however, with tourists.

It is not only pricing that has affected Thai but service, quality of aircraft maintenance and flying times (delays). As a former Gold card holder I have all but moved to other airlines now for quality of service, certainly price and seating, but cleanliness of aircraft. No amount of advertising will enhance poor service and pricing in these economic times when bang-for-buck is the major consideration.

Thanks Natalie, and for anyone wondering I will be writing something next week about problems that many freelancers working for Thailand-based publications have experienced.

If you are a freelance and are owed money by a publisher please write to me (bkkandy@myway.com) with details. I am happy to withhold your name if requested.

Am I the only one to note that there are so many negative connotations of the word blooming that its comical and actually a terrible diservice to Thailand to use the term.

Basic stuff: Blooming Thailand = Bloody Thailand (just what we need after the recent protests) = F**king Thailand = Dislike Thailand

Blooming = "the bar was full of blooming young girls waiting for their virginity to be bought"

Then try the urban dictionary and you get even nastier definitions.
