WORLD FIRST FOR 10-YEAR-OLD BIG CHILLI

After 120 editions, 14,000 pages, 8.4 million words and 84,000 images, Bangkok's one and only expat magazine The Big Chilli celebrated its tenth anniversary last month.
Other publications have come and gone but The Big Chilli has survived and even flourished. The editorial philosophy, as described in January's editorial, is simple. It says: "From the outset, our editorial philosophy was simple though completely overlooked and therefore untested by any other publication. Then, as now, our sole objective was to represent the interests of Thailand's burgeoning expatriate community through a monthly magazine offering an alternative view from the rest of the local media."
The Big Chilli team is headed by former Fleet Street reporter Colin Hastings, and there can't be too many expat events in Bangkok where Colin or one of his team is not present. That all-important visibility is another reason why The Big Chilli works.
And to further increase the brand and its image The Big Chilli has partnered with Newspaper Direct to offer a tabloid-sized black-and-white tabloid version of the magazne to pubs, bars, restaurants and clubs where there is a large expat component. The publishers claim this large-scale newspaper version of its magazine is an unprescedented development not seen anywhere else in the world.

Colin and his team have to be congratulated. Keeping a magazine going in such a tough environment takes some doing.

Well done Big Chilli!

This explains why they don't have to offer subscriber discounts! Actually, I think Big Chilli is quite good, but then I don't buy it, just browse through it in bars and restaurants.
