KEYS TO SUCCESSFUL JOURNALISM
There are taken from my time working with the Thai licensed edition of Bloomberg BusinessWeek magazine, which is sadly no longer being published. If you follow these five 'Fs, you will not go too far wrong in your career as a journalist, no matter where in the world you are working.
I have adapted these to place them in my own order of importance working as a journalist in Thailand. Your own priorities may change.
For me, they've proven to have worked time and again in several jobs. I am sure you will see the same success if you follow them.
FIRST
Be the first to report to story. It's proven that you will get more exposure and more recognition from search engines (if you're already being ranked) by being first with the news. In the case where a PR company sends countless press releases to news outlets, this can be a winning advantage. Where possible I have always aimed to publish adapted releases within 45 minutes or less.
FAST
Be the fastest to follow up being first by being fast with the detail behind the news. Many people make important decisions based on news, so you need to follow-up quickly with what it means for them.
FINAL
You must be the single, definitive source of the news item in question. Leave nothing unanswered and don't give you reader the urge to go anywhere else to get more information.
FACTUAL
It should go without saying that be factual in your reporting. You should strive to be 100 percent accurate with everything you report, because the chances are that your reader will only remember the single time in your career when you were not. Aim to impress with your use of facts, not the way you present them to the reader.
FUTURE
You should explain what your news means for the future, in the eyes of your reader. What does your news mean? That single answer could mean the difference between the reader acting or sitting still - and trust me when I say they will remember. They need to know what to expect as a result of your story, and your reputation will improve if you can tell them clearly and consisely.
