ADVICE FROM THE BRITISH EMBASSY

Here is the latest advice from The British Embassy in Bangkok:

On 19 September 2006 the Thai Army Commander, General Sonthi Booyaratglin, announced that he had established a Reform Council to take over the administration of the country. A nationwide state of Martial law has been declared. The British Embassy in Bangkok is closely monitoring the situation. If you are currently in Bangkok, you should avoid moving around the city wherever possible. If you intend to travel to, or are currently in Thailand, you should monitor all available information on the local situation and keep in contact with your tour operator. You should also avoid any demonstrations and large crowds. Movements around government buildings in Bangkok and in public may be restricted until the situation becomes clearer.

I have also had three email exchanges this morning with them, and they have been extremely helpful. I have a Japanese colleague who arrived in the office not knowing anything about the coup - the first she knew was when she read emails from her worried family and friends. She's been trying to get information from the Japanese Embassy here and has had no joy whatsoever. She's very envious of the response and advice I have got from the guys at the British Embassy here.
