BETTER OR NOT OUT HERE ?

Teresa (from Bracknell & Wokingham College) posted a message asking about my career here, whether I am enjoying it more out here, and how it compares to my former job back in the UK.
For those who don't know, my last 16 years have been spent in a variety of roles with the media. I've done pretty much everything at one time or another - photographer, sub-editor, deputy editor, sports editor, production editor, marketing manager - and my role in Thailand is using all of those experiences and more.
My job here has tripled in the four months (almost) since I came here, and right now I have lots on the go. In no particular order I am discussing magazine licenses with publishers in Singapore and New York, trying to arrange a meeting with the New York people for mid-October, English editing the content of two montly magazines, planning a redesign of one of them, promoting and selling space to the English-speaking market in Thailand for a Business Fair we are holding in November, and preparing exhibition material for a magazine event in London at the start of December. Oh yes, and add 'teaching business English to my boss' to the list as well.
With the greatest respect to my colleagues back in Wokingham, I would never ever be facing the challenges I am right now, nor learning so much had I stayed at The Times. I don't want to sound big-headed in any way, because anyone who knows me knows I am far from that, but I am basically second in charge in my company. The fact that the chairman of a Stock Exchange-listed company here was asking ME for advise last Friday says a lot, and is a great compliment to everyone I have ever worked with.
So I am enjoying it? You bet I am! How does it compare? It doesn't - because it is just so different. There are things I would change, and I will in time. Thailand, in terms of the media industry at least, is a way behind that in the UK, and I'm going to use all my experiences to make my company one of the best in the Kingdom.

sounds like your company made a smart move when they got you and the pay rise shows they appreciate the fact. Two pay rises in 5 minutes is great!! Your job sounds really interesting when you write about it and I am so glad you are enjoying it - initially when you said what you were doing I thought it sounded a bit dull for you but like most things the job is what you make it and you sound as if you have great plans
