CITY CHAO CHOW RESTAURANT
Venue: City Chao Chow, Central Rama 2,
Billed as a Chinese-Vietnamese restaurant, there was nothing instantly that differentiates this establishment from others on the same floor at this particular shopping centre.
The multi-lingual menu had seen far better days, and the ‘Care Health and Concern Taste’ motto wasn’t a good start. The open-style kitchen allows those sitting close by to see what’s happening. Tanya ordered Fried Rice Noodles topped with Sea Bass (75 baht) while I chose the 149 baht set meal of beef, mushroom salad, three coloured vegetables and rice.
Tanya’s meal arrived a good five minutes ahead of mine – but that’s nothing unusual for Thailand where it seems a meal will arrive when it’s ready, regardless of how long other diners have to wait.
She was disappointed by the high proportion of soup and the undercooked vegetables. Mine, when it eventually arrived, came in an airline-style box with each part of the meal in an individual compartment. The beef was good, the vegetables were okay but the mushroom salad was far too spicy. Even Tanya had trouble. And as for the rice .. well, you can’t go wrong with rice, can you?
I have to mention the drink. I had a coke and it arrived in what can only be described as an oversized wine glass. Alas there was far too much ice.
The restaurant itself was around three quarters full, but lacked charm and character. The floors were scuffed and in need of a clean. The waiting staff were mainly students (according to Tanya) and some even wore their school uniforms.
The bill came to 259 baht.
