I CAN GET THERE - IT'S OFFICIAL
I've just come back from interviewing a best-selling author and one of the world's leading executive coaches.
For those who don't know, Dr. Marshall Goldsmith is an author of 22 business books, the latest of which is called 'What Got You Here Won't Get You There'. It was top of the best-seller charts earlier this year and, according to Dr. Marshall, is currently the best selling business book in Germany. Just Google his name and you'll see how respected this man is.
To say I was in awe of this man is an understatement. He's given coaching to the likes of Alan Mulally, the CEO of Ford, and well as top executives of many of the Fortune 500 companies. He charges anything up to $250,000 for his services, so I reckon the 20 minutes he spent with me is probably equivalent to my yearly salary. He's also clocked up a staggering 8.8 million miles on American Airlines because he services as a motivational speaker and business coach are in constant demand - hence his 36 hours in Bangkok.
What struck me instantly is this is a guy who loves his job, and that passion is totally infectious. What he is teaching isn't hard to understand; what is hard is to follow through his principles into your career, your own workplace and your life.
This was the first interview I've done for quite a while, so when my first two questions resulted in a straight 'yes' and 'no' I was begining to wonder whether I should have stuck to just being Executive Director. But I think this was part of his plan to test me (or maybe just down to my poor opening questions) but things got much better and I got some wonderful (and exclusive)quotes. To see the full story you'll have to read Thai and get a copy of the first edition of the new magazine.
In a blog recent entry I mentioned about my search last weekend for a book. The book in question was this one, and I was delighted when he gave me a copy at the end of our chat - and signed it 'Andrew, you can get there - Marshall Goldsmith'.
