U.S. WATCHING THAILAND

Thailand has been placed on a 'priority watch list' because of its recent poor record on protection of intellectual property. According to the US administration, American companies lost US$368m in products and services in Thailand during 2006.
I would be interested to know how that figure has been calculated. If they are taking, for example, one pirate copy of Adobe Photoshop sold in Pantip Plaza for 100 baht and converting that to the US$400 it would normally cost then it's not based on a realistic situation. The average Thai person, or company for that matter, would never spend US$400 on a piece of software, so to assume that by cutting out the counterfeit software will result in extra sales is simply not correct.
On the other hand Thailand is not a poor country, so those (and I admit I have been one in the past) suggesting a reduced price for poorer countries should know that Thailand is actually ranked as the 20th largest economy in the world by the IMF and 21st by The World Bank. Would you expect Belgium, which has a small economy and is therefore ranked lower, to have reduced prices?
Although Thailand is rich in global terms, it's a poor country where many people can ill afford the basics of life, let alone counterfeit software, DVDs or medicines - all of which have been the subject of intellectual property concerns in recent weeks and months.
