STORM PHOTOGRAPHY
I've been amazed by the number of people who have commented on last week's picture of the Bangkok storm that I took from my office window. I've had two comments posted here from people I don't know, and many of my friends who regularly read The Bangkok Bugle have also said how good they think it is.
Inspired by these comments I purchased a tripod this afternoon. Everything I have taken so far has been hand-held, meaning even the slightest movements result in severe camera blur. From my six years as a press photographer I have managed to develop a technique where I can hand-hold my camera without too much blurring for anything up to a couple of seconds. With a tripod though I should be able to get some even better storm pictures. Watch this space.

I am so surprised that you don't have a tripod. Photography is your life and I would thought the first thing you purchased was a tripod when you arrived.
Nah - I rarely used a tripod when I was a press photographer. Monopods yet - for sport - but I can count the number of times I used a tripod while I was at The Wokingham Times on the fingers of one hand. They're often restricting and cumbersome, and even now I wouldn't carry it with me - just have it for when the next lightening storm arrives.
