NEW BOOKSHOP; VERY OLD BOOKS
I eventually managed to find my way to Bangkok's newest bookshop. Book Outlet by Asia Books is tucked away on the 4th floor of Amarin Plaza and opened its doors this week, although the official opening is still a few weeks away.
First impression are not good. It's been billed as being Thailand's largest English language bookshop but I'd say Kinokuniya in Siam Paragon is bigger. And being an outlet stores means it's old and often damaged copies on sale here at discounted prices. I didn't buy a thing - which is unusual for me and bookshops - but I did find a 2002 copy of the Lonely Planet Guide to Thailand and another business book that claims to help you cash in on the dot com boom. I think you get the idea.
There is an excellent range of back copies of Hello!, OK!, and similar women's magazines from the UK - all at least 10 months old, but it that's your thing you can't go wrong for 20 baht each.
I was really hoping Book Outlet would be something new and refreshingly different but it just fails to impress me on all counts.
