EMERGENCY OVER

The State of Emergency in Bangkok was lifted on Sunday lunchtime, but you'd be forgiven for not knowing. Unlike the initial announcement which received global coverage this latest announcement hasn't even been acknowledged in most media outside Thailand.
I'd estimate (completely unscientifically) the news of the imposition of the State of Emergency got around 20 times more media coverage that its subsequent lifting. So it would be easy to say the damage done to Thailand's reputation still exists because, to a large extent, most people don't know the situation has changed.

Hi Andrew - definately the tone in the English papers was one of ridicule. Much fun was made by the Sunday Times of the fact that the Prime Minister had his own cookery show and that his favourite meal was pork in Coca Cola! Its not exactly the kind of Press that any country needs. Anyway glad that the state of emergency is lifted - although by the sounds of it not much has changed.
