THINGS CAN ONLY GET BETTER, HOPEFULLY
It's a very depressing outlook for Thailand as Tuesday draws to a close. There are threats of strikes from workers in more than 40 state enterprises tomorrow, and PAD protesters have succeeded in closing Hat Yai airport in the south of the country.
The summary of the story currently leading on the BBC website says: "Our correspondent in Bangkok says there appear to be very few ways out of this crisis, with the country so bitterly divided." The Bangkok Post website is also carrying a story that says: "Metropolitan Electricity Authority labour union leader Pian Yongnu claims the country is collapsing, and democracy cannot move forward."
Shares on the Stock Exchange of Thailand fell 2.3 per cent today and the Thai baht is standing at a one-year low against the US dollar. South Korea has joined Singapore in advising its citizens not to travel to Bangkok unless essential.
Tourism, which is responsible for 6.5 per cent of Thailand's GDP, is already suffering with tourists looking elsewhere for their holidays. And investment ratings agencies are warning about the implications for the economy of a downgrading of Thailand's current 'stable' rating.
For perhaps the first time I am genuinely feeling that things will get worse before they get better.

Do some study on the uprisings of 1976 and you will get some idea of how things might get. Read especially about the Thammasat Massacre.
Democracy is a very sharp sword which cuts both ways.
