FORGET PHUKET, TRY PENANG FOR A WAY HOME

A contact of mine was due to leave yesterday evening for the Middle East. Right now he's on the road to Penang in Malaysia for a flight tonight to Singapore and then onto Dubai. He told me: "All the flights from Phuket are full; the only option appears to be the long road trip down to Malaysia."
Reports are also reaching me that some unscrupulous companies are trying to cash in by charging stranded tourists at least double the normal fare for road trips out of the country. One person has told me of a 20,000 baht quote to get to Phuket, however given the experience above that now seems pretty pointless.

Yes, I believe the best way to handle the situation is to overcharge tourists for road transport out of the nation.
