A TIP TO SAVE MONEY ON MAGAZINES

A quick trip to Chatuchak Market can save you money, as well as yield the kind of magazines you'll never find in the bookshops of Bangkok.
These three examples, Fortune, NewsWeek and Time, would set you back 520 baht in the likes of Asia Books, Kinokuniya and B2S. At Chatuchkak they can be yours, with a bit of bargaining, for 20 baht each. These are current editions; the only noticeable difference is these are copies intended from subscribers and not supposed to be sold through retail.
Consumers, market retailers and those responsible for selling on these subscription copies are the ones who gain, at the expense of publishers and the 'proper' bookshops in central Bangkok.
At the market you can also get back issues of overseas news and current affairs magazines, current editions of some Singapore and Australian magazines as well as French, German, Indonesian, Chinese and Japanese editions that you simply cannot get elsewhere in Bangkok.

It is quite common for a subscription
price to be cheaper then the wholesale price.

Sometimes a retailer takes out a subscription and sells it in his shop.

is there such a thing as a 'quick trip to Chatuchak market'? The place is a maze and not for the faint-hearted. Whereabouts are the magazines?

Bernard. Agreed on the price issue, but these issues have "Subscription issue: Not for resale" on the covers. I'm not sure there are a huge number of retailers that take out subscriptions in huge numbers.

Anonymous. I thought 'quick' didn't apply either but the last couple of weeks I've only spent 30 minutes there. The books and magazines are located close to the MRT exit. The best place for imported magazines is adjacent to the road, a few steps down inside the market.

Anonymous, the book and magazine section is quite convenient, because it's very close to the Kamphaeng Phet MRT station.

Thanks Matthew. And for further simplicity the magazine and books are located in Section One.

As Matthew says when you come out of the MRT station (with the Princess shop in front of you, turn left, walk a matter of years and you'll see several book sellers on your left. Walk deeper into that part and you'll come across a variety of magazine retaliers.

Thanks for the directions. I'll check it out next time I'm there :)

Sorry, Andy, I didn't read your earlier comment in full before I posted mine! You had already said the same thing.

And of course I should have written ".. walk a matter of YARDS" and not YEARS in my previous comment.

Next time I am there (probably this coming weekend) I will try to remember to create a 'How to Get To The Magazines" step by step photo guide.
