BANGKOK TO GET IKEA STORE, AT LAST
The Bangkok Post reports today that Thailand will get its first IKEA store, with the opening scheduled for October 2011. The 40,000 sq. meter store will be built at Bang Na Trat Km 9 at what will be known as the Mega Bang Na Complex.
Posts about IKEA have been consistently popular on this blog, and in March I blogged that plans had been put on hold amid the global financial crisis. Obviously someone has found some money from somewhere.
I am a big fan of IKEA (as you might have gathered) and spent a couple of hours at the Singapore store just nine days ago. The news that Bangkok will get its own store is really pleasing.

I hope they bring in a better choice than when they went into Borneo. I was so looking forward to their opening (I'm fond of IKEA bookcases) but the range they had was sad. So sad.
I am pretty sure the choice will be good, after all Thailand is already one of the major suppliers of goods to IKEA stores around the world. It will be a big disappointment if the choice is limited.
Dear Catherine,
I'm curious. As far as I know there is no Ikea store in Borneo.
Which store did you visit?
All best.

Hmmm... does one answer anyone posting as 'Anonymous' ?
Seems almost pointless.
I don't like anonymous comments but I don't go to the stage of banning them, unless they are spam or legally problematic.
I wish it will happen but again I am not sure. Thailand is unfourtunately not anymore attractive investment area in Asia. I somehow got a feeling that Mr. Ingvar Kamprad will ultimately decide to stay away and consentrate on other more interesting areas. IKEA's whole concept is to run the company under one banner, centrally managed, and in TH it will not be possible, look at Carlsberg. Nope, in my dreams perhaps, but I will keep my dream alive.
Pluppen,
From what I understand the deal is done and Bangkok will get at least one IKEA store.
It would be a big disappointment to me too if it doesn't happen.
