HOW MUCH FOR A THAI EDITOR?
One online advertisement running now for a Thai Editor role in Bangkok
gives you an idea what is expected – and jusy how little some publishers are
willing to pay for what is an incredibly important role.
The publisher of a ‘free’ magazine expects the editor to
edit the magazine as well as visit clients for interviews and interpret if
necessary. The clients for this magazine are listed as “every kind of Japanese
company, restaurant or store.”
Duties for the Editor will also include receiving clients
from the sales team and visit them for interviews, as well as the ability to
translate magazine contents from Thai to Japanese.
The publisher also wants the Editor to: “Edit the contents
of the magazine with other team members to make it more interesting.”
The ad specified the job is only open to Thai nationals aged
between 22 and 25-years-old, and possess a Bachelor’s Degree from any related
field. It also says fresh graduate is welcome to apply but they must have good
Japanese skills as well as conversational English skills. Offices for this publisher are in central Bangkok and
offices hours are from 9am until 6pm Monday to Friday.
The salary on offer for what appears to be a demanding role
that requires high degrees of skill is between THB 20,000 and THB 25,000. That’s
the equivalent of US$ 570 to US$ 710 per month – or GBP 370 – GBP 460 per
month.
That’s how much (little) a Thai editor can expect to earn
when working with one of the lesser known publishers in Bangkok.
