NEW TRENDS, AS PREDICTED
Back in October last year I wrote about three emerging trends in the Thai magazine and publishing industry. One of these was an expected increase in the number of "pocket" sized editions of Thai magazines.
Now it's happening.
Previously there were just a couple of prominent Thai magazines that seemed to be experimenting with the format alongside their traditional offering, but the number has now increased in line with the start of the New Year.
Pictured here is the current January 2016 edition of the "New Size" publication of licensed Thai language title Cleo.
The biggest challenge with this size, as I have documented before, will be exposure. Without good shelf merchandising it will simply disappear behind its larger (in size) competitors and the rest of the titles that proliferate the bookshelves in Thailand.
With Cleo it's slightly different because this is a title with a strong following and readership, and a magazine that its readers will actively search out from the rest.
