EQUALITY IN THE WORKPLACE

There's no such thing as equal opportunities when it comes to recruitment in Thailand. It's common to see 'Thai National Only' or even 'No Foreigner' in the sits vac pages, but equally common are phrases such as 'Thai Female, not over 30', or 'Male 27-35' for jobs that could be done equally well by both sexes.
There was some amusing language in an ad recently. The position for a sales executive stipulated that the candidate must be 'agressive'. I knew what they meant but the use of language left a lot to be desired.
There are actually quite of lot of sectors where it's impossible to get a work permit, and therefore impossible to work legally. These include hair dressing, beauty therapy, rice farming, accountancy, match making and most sectors of the building industry. The idea is to give more work to the Thai people, but can you imagine what kind of uproar there would be if a policy like that was introduced in the UK?
