NEW AIRPORT OPENS

Just five hours ago (at 4am Thai time) Bangkok's new Suvarnabhumi Airport was officially opened. At least three local television channels carried all-night live broadcasts of the events. After spending some US$ 3 billion on the hi-tec project, a heavy storm yesterday evening exposed some minor leaks in the roof that were sorted with the help of a few plastic buckets and mops. According to reports the Duty Free area isn't totally completed either, and there are still signs of work going on around the place.
Even so, it's open and appears to be functioning well. Let's hope it will achieve its goal of promoting Thailand as a travel hub for this part of the world.
