EMERGENCY RULE IN BANGKOK?
The General who led the coup last September has asked his appointed Prime Minister to impose a State of Emergency in Bangkok, to quell the growing (but still small) opposition to the new Government.
There's no answer as yet from the PM, but General Sonthi is keen to maintain 'stability'. He said without stability investment and tourism will be hit. (As quoted in today's International Herald Tribune).
The irony is that by imposing such measures investment and tourism are exactly the areas that will be hit. Who is going to come to Bangkok on holiday under a State of Emergency? For one thing I doubt standard travel insurance will apply. And once again the image of Thailand with the outside world is tarnished by even the hint of such restrictions being imposed.
These powers are also rumoured to include the ability to censor what is an already restricted media. However in these days of global news the Government cannot hope to censor everything. It's certainly going to be an interesting time. Keep checking back.
