MANGOSTEEN PRICES SLUMP 90 PER CENT

The price of mangosteen, a popular (and smelly) Thai fruit, has slumped dramatically in recent weeks. As little as one month ago prices were between 70 and 80 baht per kilo, and last week the price had dropped to between 15 and 20 baht per kilo.
Yesterday the price had dropped even lower - to between 4 and 6 baht per kilo - prompting the Government to step in and buy remaining fruit at the set price of 12 baht per kilo. This move was designed to appease farmers who were becoming increasingly angry and slipping further into debt.
