ELEPHANTS IN CHAINS ?
This week could prove decisive in the political future of Thailand. On Wednesday the Supreme Court is set issue a ruling on the dissolution of two political parties. I'll not go into the specific details because you can read about it elsewhere if you're interested, but many people are anticipating widespread unrest following the verdict.
Earlier this week there was a report that 99 elephants (99 is a lucky and symbolic number) were set to descend on the capital with their mahouts as part of a protest. Authorities issued a warning to the effect that mahouts AND their elephants would be arrested if they did come to Bangkok.
It seems Thai elephants are also subject to Government rule. I wonder what their defence might be, after all they cannot claim ignorance as they've already been warned, right ? And I can't help but wonder about the size of the handcuffs the authorities intend to use for those elephants that resist arrest, or indeed where they might be held pending a court hearing?
