TAKING TO THE FAIRWAYS
Following my 'order' last week to take up golf, and my subsequent purchase of some clubs and a bag, this weekend I'll be hitting balls in anger for the first time in many years. I think I'll start slowly at a driving range, rather than embarrass myself at a real golf course.
Last weekend when I brought the clubs I was allowed to try them for size in a small room, hitting balls against a screen that, with the clever use of modern technology, showed me just how far the ball would have gone on a real course.
After topping my first attempt using a seven iron, I steadily improved until by the sixth or seventh swing I was getting up to 100 yards in distance. Check back on Monday for, hopefully, some photographic evidence of just how bad I really am.

I went with some friends to a driving range a few weeks back. We're all what you might call "novices", and so we pretty much terrorised all the other golfers into leaving. We hit a few wayward shots that went straight up and hit the roof, not even making it out onto the range. The fear in people's eyes was quite satisfying, but also a little shameful on our part.
Wow, looks like moving to Bangkok is a good one. You are more an English man there than over here. Ha ha ha - make sure you don't slow down everyone behind you. Just joking!
