THAILAND GETS TOUGH ON ... BILLBOARDS
The Bangkok Post is reporting that Thailand's Prime Minister has ordered one of his ministers to "sort" the problem of too many billboards on the roads leading to Suvarnabhumi Airport. He is reported as saying they might be distracting.
Am I missing the point? The whole point of billboard advertising is to get a message across, so that fact he's distracted by them only adds weight to the argument that they work. (I will declare a vested interest here because we've looked at this option as part of our marketing strategy for the new magazine).
The fact is that some of those billboards he speaks of command fees of upwards of 3 million baht per month or more, and generate income and tax in the process. And another fact to bear in mind is that many of these billboards are booked months in advance by some of Thailand's biggest investors, such as Samsung and Toyota.
Perhaps it's not such a good idea to start messing with the strategies of these big players?

Thailand has the weirdest media and advertising regulations and what nots.
What's so distracting about the billboards along that stretch? At least it provides an alternative view (other than the cloudy skyline)as well as last minute opportunities to snap some photos of Bangkok billboards en route to the airport. :)
