THE TRAIN NOW DEPARTING ...

... from platform four might soon be heading for London, if recent reports coming out of Iran are to be believed.
The Islamic Republic News Agency has said it will soon be possible to travel from Europe to South East Asia by train. A 11,460km line will link Bulgaria to the southern Chinese province of Kunming, passing through the likes of Turkey, Iran, India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam en route. From Bulgaria it would be possible to connect with the rest of the European rail network.
The problem until recently has been the different sized tracks in each country. That problem has now been sorted (apparently) making it theoretically possible to travel from London Waterloo to Bangkok, and beyond.
I can almost hear the station announcement now ... 'We'd like to apologise for the delay to the 15.45 service to Bangkok. This is due to buffalos on the line in the Bangladesh area.'

How long before this is ready? I quite fancy a five-week train ride home. Should save on airfare.

That's the thing Matt - I think it's been at the planning stage for a few years now. Some kind of agreement has recently been signed, but I still think it's a few years away at best.
