PHUKET AIR CRASH
As many of you will know by now, an MD-82 plane belonging to budget airline One-Two Go crashed whilst attempting to land at Phuket International Airport yesterday evening. The flight took off from Bangkok's Don Muang airport and reports are that more than 80 people lost their lives.
One-Two Go is the low-cost arm of Orient Thai Airlines and operates a relatively small fleet of 13 planes, including five of the type that crashed. They fly exclusively within Thailand, and operate a 'one fare for all flights' policy. Any flight on any of their routes is 1,750 baht (25 quid approx.) one way including taxes.
One surprising thing for me is that within five hours of the crash, the full list of passengers had been made public and was being carried on The Bangkok Post website. I doubt the next of kin of those involved had all been contacted by then, so there's a good chance they'd read their loved one was on the flight before being notified officially.
The plane involved was reportedly 24 years old. It first began service with Trans World Airlines in 1983 and was leased by One-Two Go in March of this year. At this stage there is nothing to say the age of the aircraft had anything to do with the crash, and there are reports that the plane had been circling and was attempting to land in a heavy rain or thunderstorm.
