THIS DAY LAST YEAR
It's one year today since the coup. I can remember that day well. Firstly I slept through the events of the night, so the first time I realised something was different was when CNN's headline was 'Coup in Thailand'. There was also a lot less traffic on the journey to work that morning. Yes, I did go to work. Nothing much had changed.
I got a phone call from my boss while I was sitting at my desk at around 7am. He said he'd decided that, in common with many other businesses, that day was going to be a holiday. Umm ... a bit too late for me.
It was a normal day in most other respects. I sent reassuring emails to family, friends and business contacts, and I even bravely went for an extended walk during lunch to try and spot a soldier.
Thailand today is not much different from Thailand one year ago, and I guess it will still be largely the same this time next year as well.
(One thing that hasn't changed is that many Thai people still say 'coop' when talking about the events of September 19, 2006).
