TIME IS THE MAIN COMPETITION

There's a really good interview with the editor in chief of The Economist on the MediaBistro website right now. http://mediabistro.com/articles/cache/a9945.asp
John Micklethwait has got it spot on when he says the main competitor for all printed media right now is "time", not the magazine but people's time.
I was saying exactly the same thing to my staff yesterday during a meeting about the redesign. Business magazines especially, who are naturally aiming at the ultra busy business professionals, must be relevant and easy to access. They must evolve, and it's no exaggeration to say that in 10 years that people will get their news automatically downloaded to their mobile phone to listen to as an MP3 file on the way to work.
Publishers that don't understand that and who don't evolve and adapt will simple cease to exist.
