THE RISING COST OF IMPORTED MAGAZINES
The price of imported magazine in Bangkok is rising, and for the first time in two years I opted not to buy one my regular titles because of the cost.
The cover price of this UK magazine has remained at 3.95 but the price here in Thailand has risen in just six months from 375 baht to 445 baht today. That's slightly more than seven quid in UK money.
You can be certain the reason for this is the increasing oil and fuel prices. The fact is that air freight is increasing so the products shipped using this method will obviously increase too.
It could well mean fewer sales for the overseas imported titles as I don't think many people can justify paying an extra 70 baht for the same product, especially if they buy as many magazines per month as me.

Do you happen to know what the Economist costs at Bangkok newsstand these days? I used to buy it years ago, but stopped for some reason - can't remember now. I doubt the price has gone down.
I don't know about The Economist but I will find out for you tomorrow (Monday).
I can tell you that BusinessWeek (UK edition) is 175 baht and arrives just 36 hours after being printed, and TIME (Asian edition, somewhat thinner than the global edition) is 150 baht.
Thank you. From memory, the Economist which comes here is printed in Singapore, which is also close by.
As promised, the cost of The Economist in Bangkok is 210 baht. This is the Asian edition so will differ slightly from the one that appears on newstands elsewhere in the world.
Thank you. It's not expensive, but I don't think I would buy it regularly at that price...not when so much of it is available free on the net.
