THE RISING COST OF PRINT

I've found out today that our printer intends to increase the costs of printing our magazine by 10 per cent next month. Not ideal, although it's a sign of the times and understandable. We were somewhat fortunate to have negotiated a fixed price one-year agreement but now we'll be paying the price - if we choose to stay with our current company.
I'm sure we are not alone in the media in seeing huge increases in costs, and I wouldn't be surprised to see a couple of things in the next few months. I predict some magazine and newspapers will be forced to increase their cover prices, and sadly I also think the number of publications that close will rise. Margins are so tight and in general revenues are not increasing at the same rate as costs.

Note: This is the 1,000th post. I thought long and hard about what to write but I figured I wouldn't do anything special. All my posts are special, right? Seriously, a big thanks to all of my regulars. You and I both know who you are and I really appreciate your comments and support.

Congrats on your 1k posts!

I have a quick Q: Do you ever see print dying? I used to deal with many print publications when I was working in the UK and over the 5 years (this was 5 years ago) they were all seeing an anal decrease in sales. With the likes of the Kindle and the web getting exploding, I think it's not going to be long before we see the end of print publications. What are your thoughts Andrew?

Chris, thanks for your comments.

Your question is interesting. Personally I think print will be around for a long time. In the US those declines - and moves to the web - have gone full circle and quite a few print publications are showing increases in circulation now. There is something about holding and feeling a newspaper or magazine that you cannot recreate in any other form. I will blog on this subject with some examples this coming week. Thanks, as always.
