WANNA BUY A MAGAZINE?
I know at least three Thailand-based magazines that are up for sale right now. If you have a desire to enter the world of publishing and have at least one million baht then you could be the owner and publisher. The one million baht is just the sale price and you would probably need at least that amount again as liquid cash to take care of printing and other costs while waiting for advertising revenue to come in.
Buying a magazine is just one option. You could start your own from scratch (not to be recommended) or license an existing magazine brand from overseas. My company represents around 200 such magazine publishers that are looking to break into the Thai market and license their brands to local publishers.
So if you want to get into the publishing and media business in Thailand you know who to contact!

Thanks for this one Andrew. Unfortunately there's an economic reason for these magazines to be on the chopping block. Maybe online-publishing is a more promising way to go? Is there any English language publication up for sale?
Sure. If the magazines are successful the publisher would want to hang on to them, but perhaps we a new vision and new business model these titles can work.
Two of the three existing Thailand-based titles I know about are English language ones but from the licensing point-of-view around 80 per cent are English.
Hi Andrew, Many thanks for your blog which I read with interest. I am in the (automotive & IT)media business in South Africa looking for journalistic opportunities in Thailand.Do you have any suggestions?
Howard, thanks for your kind comments.
I will be honest. Editorial opportunities for non-Thai nationals are limited. Occasionally there are positions (mainly for sub-editors) advertised in The Bangkok Post but I've not seen too many others.
There are a number of English language titles here (and I will eventually be putting that information together in a downloadable PDF) but non-Thai people probably only make up a small proportion of the editorial staff.
In automotive and IT there are a number of magazines, both licensed from overseas such as Auto Bild, Top Gear, PC World, etc., but none have any non-Thai people as far as I am aware.
The other thing to remember is wages, as you will have seen from my post last Friday. Wages here are very low compared to the rest of the world.
If I hear of anything I will let you know.
