COSMOGIRL MAGAZINE TO CLOSE
Cosmogirl, the teenage spin-off of the global Cosmopolitan magazine, is to close in December according to reports including this one from the New York Times.
The publisher, Hearst, will continue to operate the associated website although it's unclear what will happen to the licensed local language editions of the magazine in the UK, Holland, China, Hong Kong and Indonesia. Subscribers to Cosmogirl will receive fellow Hearst title Seventeen after the last edition appears in December.
Ultimately it appears a decline in advertising revenues was the nail in the coffin for Cosmogirl, which started life in 2000. The magazine was reported to be the best selling teen magazine in the United States with a verified circulation of more than 1.4 million sold copies per month, of which around 20 per cent were sold in shops at $2.99.
Hearst is a media conglomerate with magazines such as Seventeen, Marie Claire, Cosmopolitan, Harper's Bazaar and Esquire. It also has owns more than 15 daily and close to 50 weekly newspapers in the U.S.
Is this another step closer to the end of print magazines, or is it just a publisher looking to combine two similar magazines and strengthen their position?
