ILLEGAL MYGAZINES WEBSITE CLOSES
The copyright-infringing mygazines.com website has closed due to "monetary reasons and the state of the global economy", according to a statement from the owners.
Dozens of North American publishers were recently successful in legal action to have the site take down copyright protected pages. The site allowed members of the public to upload scanned pages from magazines for general viewing, and according to various media reports there were as many as 127,000 registered users.
Mygazines launched earlier this year, as I blogged about, and I was subsequently quoted in a couple of newspapers and magazines about the negative impact such a site would have on publishers. At the time if was dubbed the 'Napster for magazines', and although no Thai magazines ever appeared on this site I am personally pleased with the demise of this site. It had the potential to severely damage many publishers around the world.
