MANCHESTER UNITED'S ASIAN TOUR
You may have read about the ill-feeling that has been caused in Malaysia by Manchester United's scheduling of their pre-season tour at the same time as the Asian Cup finals. It seems as though the Red Devils are now caving in the public pressure and reorganising the last leg of their tour which coincides with the final stages of Asia's biggest football event. Essentially it's the equivalent of the European Championships for this part of the world.
I think it does show a lack of sensitivity on United's part to schedule matches to take place during the finals. It's almost saying they are bigger than Asian football. That might be true, but it's certainly no way to treat what is a huge and lucrative fan base. And they've lost respect in the process; the President of the Malaysian Football Association is reported as saying they're not welcome at all.
Manchester United is a high profile club but what about Reading? They are scheduled to take part in the Peace Cup in South Korea at roughly the same time, yet there have been no calls (as far as I am aware) for them to cancel their tour. I know it's different because South Korea is not one of the host countries for the Asian Championships (like Malaysia) but they stand a good chance of progressing to the latter stages and will certainly be taking part in the competition whilst Reading are playing.
