NEW CYBER CRIME BILL PASSED

Thailand has voted to introduce a 'cyber crime' law with immediate effect, according to a report in The Bangkok Post. Essentially this means it will now be regarded as a crime to use proxy servers or other means to withhold computer IP addresses, and by doing so bypass the Government's censoring of certain websites.
The report also says the bill will give the power to penalise acts 'deemed to damage the country both directly and indirectly', including those carried out abroad. If that law had been in place a month ago then author of 'that' YouTube video could have committed an offense, and theoretically at least Thailand could have sought prosecution.
The bill is not just about IP addresses, although you can bet that's what will get the headlines. It also tackles other cyber crime issues such as theft of data, chat room grooming, etc.
What do you think? Is this a good idea or is it a step too far? Let me know - but remember not to use a proxy server when replying!

It's not a great idea. People use proxies for all sorts of reasons, not just for committing crimes. I don't know how this is going to work practically, if at all.
