WATER WATER EVERYWHERE
The rainy season in Bangkok has arrived, and it's at least six weeks earlier than normal according to some reports.
This morning's eight mile journey to the office was the wettest for many months, and it's not really going to get much better for the next few months. On the plus side the heat of recent days and weeks has gone and today's predicted high is a mere 28 degrees Celsius, although with high humidity.
On a side issue, a report coming from the head of Thailand's National Disaster Warning Centre has estimated that Bangkok will be under water within 20 years. This guy is often dismissed as a crackpot because of his controversial claims but he always backs up his claims with solid facts.
The facts are that Bangkok is dissected by more than 1,000 canals, and the city is actually only a metre or so above sea level. Combined with the fact that the city is largely built on soft, loamy soil which means the city is sinking by anything up to 10 cms per year.
Perhaps I should learn to swim, or at the very least look at buying a boat?

A road in front of my previous office can become a small Klong Sansab easily, just after five minutes of raining. My friends and I have ever planned to make a bamboo raft or raise money to buy a small boat. Then we can cross the canal to buy something to eat at 7-11 on the opposite site. hahaha..
