THE WORLD'S MOST POINTLESS WORD?

I go through phases where I develop an intense dislike of certain words. Working with a largely American-written magazine a lot of these originate from American English.
The word I hate right now is 'shuttered'. I have seen it so much recently and I think it's totally pointless. Why use shuttered when closed means exactly the same and is shorter? For example, XX Company shuttered its flagship publication last month ... see what I mean?
Perhaps writers use it as it's more descriptive, what do you think?
